Canadian father jailed after refusing to refer to his biological daughter as a boy

A court in British Columbia issued a warrant on March 4 for the man, Robert Hoogland, finding him in contempt of court for continuing to refer to his child as his daughter.

Under a previous gag order, Hoogland had been barred from giving interviews about the family's case, from trying to convince his daughter to stop transition procedures, and from sharing any information about her ongoing health or therapies.

He was also told he must never use her female birth name or refer to her "as a girl or with female pronouns," even in conversations with other people outside the home.

"The court was gracious enough that they did not police my thoughts, but everything else they could," said Hoogland at the time.

Hoogland surrendered himself to police after the warrant was issued.

The father has repeatedly tried to find mental health treatments for his daughter aside from gender-reassignment procedures, something recommended by a doctor instead of trying counseling or medication.

"What happens when the bubble explodes and the delusion ends… She can never go back to being a girl in the healthy body she should have had… These kids don't understand," he said.
