sorry to derail your thread, Mega
couldn't help it.
In truth, SyrianGirl is putting our quite a lot of stuff on this conflict lately, I always recommend her vids and not just because she's easy on the eyes
Prayers to all those getting wrecked out there. What a place to be alive right now wtf
If Trump does anything that favors Armenia it will be framed as him being a Russian puppet in the election rhetoric. He will probably have to give ground to the war hawks of washington and side with the Turks in some way.

Could this be the reason they're doing it, to potentially implicate trump as a Russian stooge?
People say they all want the truth, but when they are confronted with a truth that disagrees with them, they balk at it as if it were an unwanted zombie apocalypse come to destroy civilization.

As someone who has always had an unusual interest in dying cultures and languages the side story of the Udi people being used as a political football by the Azeris in this conflict is naturally of interest to me. While looking at maps of the Caucasus region from late antiquity you might have noticed a second country of Albania sitting about where Azerbaijan is today. This place was known to the Byzantines as Caucasian Albania, a place far away from and completely distinct from Balkan Albania. The term Albania comes from the Romans and the two Albanias were no more related to each other than, say, the Welsh Britons and the Walloons of Belgium are (common Roman Latin name again, occurring once again with the Vlach's of the Balkans.) Their Armenian neighbors referred to them as Aghvank, or Aluanc. They are a Christian Dagestani people speaking an extreme outlier language of the Lezgic Northeast Caucasian group. They are dead ringers for the Dagestani fighters we see lately in UFC competition. The relationship is obvious, beyond just language.
*note an eastern Iberia appears on the map here. This was the Latin word for Georgia at the time. It gets confusing
Luckily the last eight thousand or so Udi are still with us, although this is down from the Russian estimate of some 200,000 Eastern Udi Christians living primarily in the Gabala district of Azerbaijan, the area where the last and smallest version of Caucasian Albania was situated in northern Azerbaijan, when the region was conquered by the Russian Empire around 200 years ago. It seems the Russians turned their Church Of Caucasian Albania over to the control of the Armenian Church under Armenian pressure and it resulted in a rapid loss of Udi identity. The Western Udi lived in Karabakh, the district now the center of the current war and the Azeris point to this as their claim to the region as Azeri (Udi). Of course it's a lot more complicated than that as Karabakh actually shifted back and forth between Albanian and Armenian control over the centuries with both nations generally being under Iranian rule in some fashion.
In recent times the Western Udi lived in the village of Nij in the Gabala district while the Eastern Udi lived in the Village of Vartashen until the war between the two countries following the collapse of the Soviet Union when the majority of Eastern Udi were removed from Vartashen by Azeri forces and fled to Georgia as refugees, apparently because they belonged to the Armenian Church. The village was renamed Oguz and Turkified. Still, incredibly, despite this the Azerbaijan government still has no problem using these people as their claim to the lands of Karabakh,.

The ancient Udi-Alban church of Nij. Abandonded for ages but now back in action
The Udi church of Varteshen
Two more Udi churches of impressive vibtage.
The mountaintop Gandzasar monastery of Karabakh. Amenian or Udi-Aghvank? Might have to go to war to decide.

Through a centuries long process of loss of territory to Muslim conquerors, mass Muslim conversions and the eventually handing over of the Alban Church by the Russians to Armenia the ancient writing of this people eventually became entirely lost, and with it their own narrative of their history. This would take a dramatic turn for the better with the discovery of an ancient Georgian manuscript in response to the fire at St Catherine's Monastery in Sanai in 1975. The Georgian writing obscured older Caucasian Albanian writing that it was written over. Georgian linguist Zaza Aleksidze undertook the project and quickly discovered the text was easily mutually intelligible with modern Udi. Unfortunately it is religious text, not a people's history but it does firmly establish the Uddins as heirs to Caucasian Albania once and for all.

For those of you who just can't get enough about ancient Christian nations that were wiped out by Muslim invaders here are links to Movses Kalankatuatsi and Movses Daskhurantsi's seventh and tenth century histories of Caucasian Albania. These are the definitive, and really the only authoritative histories of Caucasian Albania in existence,
