Depending on depth of damage, you want to remove any existing clearcoat and sand out the dings, blemishes directly unless you're looking to change the colour of the unit you'll want to attempt to preserve the colour underneath (not always possible) if you're restaining you want to be very diligent about removing all the clear coat. Otherwise your finish will come out mottled.

Don't use a power sander to remove the finish, a hand sanding will allow you more control and finesse over the final look.

To reapply clear, don't use rollers, ideally you want to spray it for the best finish, otherwise your next bet is to use a foam applicator. Be sure to not shake the clearcoat before application this will create bubbles in the finish you can't get out. Stir it gently, ensure you leave no applicator lines.

After 24 hrs give finish a light sand with a high grit paper and reapply a second coat.

Voila new furniture.

I would leave it. Then again I decorated my last place with stuff from the thrift store and Craigslist. Minus my bedroom set. Which was overpriced junk in the end.

Buuuuuuut

If you are set on fixing it up I'd sand that whole fucker down to bare wood. See how that looks, then go from there
