An Exercise in GRATITUDE

Postby Masato » Mon Jan 05, 2015 10:01 am

Hey all

I thought this up over the holidays, and quite enjoyed it. I encourage anyone else to give it a try.

*note: You cannot do this exercise sitting at your computer; it must be done sometime in your regular real life.

Here's how it goes:

1. Imagine that you are maybe 85 years old, and have just died. Your life as you knew it is GONE - never to be lived again.

2. Yet, imagine that you have been somehow given a chance to go back and review just the finest moments; one last chance to scroll through your memories nostalgically and reflect upon the life you have just lived.

3. Imagine that you are in this spiritual 'photo-album' review RIGHT NOW (not as you are reading this, but during the real-life moment that you choose) - You are not actually alive, but are only experiencing things in MEMORY as a spirit in the netherworld.

4. Notice all the things you take for granted; make as though you are overwhelmed with all the memories of EVERYTHING; be in marvel of the little details we never pay attention to... laugh at all the funny things we normally complain about... remember the colors, the sounds, the textures of all the things that make up this unique and perfect moment in your story...the people you love, the familiar faces you enjoy seeing... Say in your mind: "Oh yeah! Remember this? And THIS?? lol". - 'Wash your eyes with honor' at all the simple things you love... be proud and happy of this unique life you lived, and treasure it as you are about to leave it behind and go into the spiritual realm.

5. Once you have appreciated your situation from this perspective, come back again to the truth that you are not actually dead, but are allowed to continue in this wonderful memory, and go interact with it in the same nostalgic appreciation. You are NOT dead..! You are ALIVE! Go explore, enjoy every detail. For who knows? Maybe this IS all but a memory!

Good times gone, and you missed them
What's gone wrong in your system?
Things they bounce like a Spalding
What'd you think, did you miss your calling?

It's so free, this kind of feeling
It's like life, it's so appealing
When you've got so much to say
It's called gratitude, and that's right

Good times gone, but you feed it
Hate's grown strong, you feel you need it
Just one thing, do you know you
What you think, that the world owes you?

What's gonna set you free?
Look inside and you'll see
When you've got so much to say
It's called gratitude, and that's right

-Beastie Boys - Gratitude Lyrics

- The life is like a phootobook, we have just the memories.:D
- I rent this space for advertising

Don't be selfish, preserve this world for the next generations.

I'll never long for what might have been
Regret won't waste my life again
I won't look back I'll fight to remain

One thing that The Dean posted once was to my recollection.
Live in the present. Doing otherwise causes anxiety or regret.
