Rod Sterling - Where do ideas come from?

Postby Flying Eye Angle » Fri Sep 05, 2014 4:20 pm

Found some Rod Sterling interviews on a video editing website recently, and realized why the Twilight Zone was the only old black and white non comedy tv show that I liked when I was a little kid. His writing and speaking mustve seemed so alien to all those tight assed programmed robot people back in that era of time

Part 2 Writing to please an audience

Something I often have to remember when making a video that I want to keep making weirder and weirder

Rod Sterling is a pimp.

Plain and simple.

Wow just watched, those were amazing.

I really didn't know anything about Serling, that was impressive.

FEA, I think you and I can relate to a lot of that content about degree of concern for audience. When a creative person is inspired to make something, does the audience reaction really matter? Reversely, what is the point of creating, if not to communicate with others?

See the way he worked that room, man... I bet he was a great teacher.

FEA, do you write as well in some way? I am mostly all self-taught through reading books about screenplay structure, and of course through trying to write things as well, but now I wonder how much fun it would be to attend a good workshop or something like that one day.

Makes me wanna go watch some old twilight zones :)

I havnt learned any proper way of writing. Just seen a billion movies and tv shows. I should read a book or 2. Your story plan from that other thread looked so organized compared to my notes filling up scrap pieces of paper. Ill probably watch some youtube writing lecture videos or something one day.

I remember watching the Twilight zone for the first time when I was 8 or 9 maybe. A marathon came on and there was nothing else to watch on tv. I thought it was a old horror tv show or something and thought I would hate it. I loved it

Screenwriting is/was a good way to learn because you are FORCED to structure it properly. Your story MUST fit into roughly 100 minutes (100 pages - 1 min screentime per page is average)

That means if you don't have your first turning point by at the latest page 30, your midpoint by page 60, and your 3rd act starting around page 90, it doesn't work.

You really have to understand your plot points, character arcs etc, and you can't drag anything on or have any unnecessary scenes. Really forces you to be efficient, a screenplay should be a well-oiled machine.

I read TONS of books on it while writing my first script, but in the end I found nothing was wasn't said, or said better in THIS book:

Amazing book, I still use it as a bible to go back to sometimes. SO smart
