Turkish Citizens vs Turkish State

Postby Masato » Sat Jun 01, 2013 12:50 pm

Hey all - much happening in Turkey right now... seems they are among the world's leaders in saying 'enough is enough' and taking a stand.

I am not Turkish and would like to learn more. Here are some links I've found quickly to get started, others please share your perspectives/insights/links/experiences

This is mostly in Istanbul by Turks who are more secular. The countryfolks are ok with the government and the western Turks don't have a strong candidate to put up against Erdogan that can argue they can keep Turkey where it is. Most Turks remember the fact that Erdogan's administration was the one that help Turkey rise up economically, while the traditional parties kept Turkey in the red.

^ good insights, thanks.

Are you in Turkey? Is the movement still going strong? Increasing? Fizzling out?

Sometimes it seems that if governments just hold on long enough the protesters eventually just go back to work/sleep (Occupy)

I'm Turkish, but I live in Denmark. Loads of family living there and my own mother just returned after spending a month in Konya (that's in the middle of Turkey). The Turkish news are more or less ignoring it, and most Turks from what my relatives tell me don't consider it a big deal. The movement, to use your colourful term, is fizzling out.

My own opinion (not that you asked :) ) is that Erdogan should've never proposed to get rid of that park and he should reconsider his alcohol law, otherwise I'm a supporter of him since he took a joke of country (in terms of economy) that borderline begged the EU to be inducted, into a powerful country that now no longer needs the EU.
