5 Things You Didn’t Know About Samoa Joe

Postby Edge Guerrero » Wed Aug 29, 2018 1:34 pm

5.) Longest reigning ROH World Champion

At 645 days, Samoa Joe till date remains the longest reigning ROH World Champion in the history of the company. The championship reign is considered one of the greatest of the modern era, with his rivals including CM Punk and Austin Aries, the former who he had an epic trilogy with.

The length of his reign showed the prestige that the ROH World title held and it was a huge moment when Austin Aries finally dethroned him at Final Battle 2004. The reign put Joe on the map along with CM Punk, a couple of years prior to being signed by WWE. Joe would have to take the longer road, however.

4.) History with John Cena

Prior to John Cena’s WWE signing, Samoa Joe and he were both training and a part of Ultimate Pro Wrestling. They even feuded with each other. Cena would later be signed by WWE while Joe was told by Jim Ross that he wouldn’t be signed by WWE.

To his credit, Joe proved JR wrong after a very long journey. In the time between his eventual signing, Joe mastered the craft and became one of the hottest superstars in the world. It was during the time that WWE slowly started pushing more superstars who didn’t fit the prototype look. He would make an immediate impact upon his debut in NXT.

3.) Part of the only 5-star match in TNA history

When AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels and Samoa Joe clashed at Unbreakable 2005 for the X-Division Championship, no one knew that it would be the greatest match in TNA history. Simply put, it was the three best superstars in the company giving everything they had to put on an unforgettable classic.

Not giving the fans a moment to breathe, the three main evented and stole the show. For years to come, this match would set the bar for top quality matches not only in TNA, but in the pro-wrestling world. The best part about the match was that no one came out of the bout looking bad. What they did prove, however, was that TNA had some of the best talent in the world.

2.) He was a dancer in the 1984 Summer Olympics

Samoa Joe belongs to a family of Polynesian dancers named Tiare Productions. The group are considered revolutionary in their field and they performed at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics of 1984. Joe was only 5 years old at this time and performed with his family, so it may come as a surprise that one of the toughest men in wrestling was part of a dance group. It’s a unique feat that not many people can claim to have.

1.) Wasn’t supposed to be a part of the WWE main roster

When Samoa Joe was done with Impact Wrestling, he had a “free agent” tag for the first time in ages. Triple H gave Samoa Joe a direct call and laid out the terms to him right away. He told Joe that there’s a spot for him on NXT, but they couldn’t promise him a main roster call-up since Vince McMahon likely wouldn’t be interested in someone in their late 30s.

Joe was hired, not to train in the Performance Center but to be a part of NXT and help elevate the brand. He was successful in doing this, capturing two NXT Championships in the process. During his time in NXT, he proved to be a valuable asset and in early 2017, was called up to the main roster as Triple H’s hired gun.

He’s been in several main events since, facing the cream of the crop in WWE. It seems inevitable that Joe will be a part of the elite list of world champions in WWE.
