The Bellator lightweight title has not been defended in more than a year, but no interim title has been created, so for top contender Patricky Freire, he’s accepted another non-title matchup.

MMAjunkie confirmed that Freire, better known as Patricky Pitbull, will take on Japanese submission specialist Goiti Yamauchi at Bellator 205. The entire main card will air live at 9 PM ET/PT on Paramount Network on Friday, September 21st.

Pitbull (19-8) is coming off a TKO win over Derek Campos in February, making his third straight victory and his fifth overall out of his last six. He also knocked out Josh Thomson in February 2017, as well as edged out former UFC champion Benson Henderson by split decision later that September.

“I’m excited for this fight,” Patricky said in a statement to Bloody Elbow. “Goiti is a top fighter in the weight class and came pretty close to knocking out [Michael Chandler]. If he believed in it a bit more he perhaps could have made it.

“I’m not looking past Goiti, I know it’ll be a tough task. He’s durable, has never been finished, but it’s my time now and I’m looking forward to be the first to do it.”

As Patricky mentioned, Yamauchi (22-4) did fight Michael Chandler earlier this year, suffering a lopsided unanimous decision loss at Bellator 192. However, Yamauchi had Chandler stumbled off a question mark kick in his best offense of the fight. That defeat snapped his three-fight winning streak, of which all came via submission, including vs. Ryan Couture and Adam Piccolotti.

Current Bellator 155-pound king Brent Primus has been on the shelf due to injury, which is why his rematch with Chandler in April was nixed. It’s created somewhat of a logjam in the division, and the new twist to the tale is Chandler’s impending free agent status.

For Patricky Pitbull, that means he has to wait for his crack at the belt, and he still hopes that it can materialize by the end of 2018.

“Of course I would like to be fighting for the title next, but there’s too much going on and I like to be active,” he said. “I’m going there looking to win in emphatic fashion so whatever happens next with the title, I’ll be fighting for it. Ideally I’d like that to happen before the year is over.”

Bellator 205 is headlined by a featherweight bout between former champion Pat Curran and rising star A.J. McKee.
