Down here we use "mate" at times during shit talking/fighting but as soon as you say "bro" it seems to calm the situation down.
Mate is more generic but bro means youre close or trying to be cool with the guy (guy)
On another note we had two Canadian brothers start at our HS and started using the term "guy", this was in the late 90's and they we not well received
I pulled the older one aside and explained that when Aussies get confused they generally start throwing punches so say mate or bro and they were cool after that
